AIM: What are genes, and how do they control our traits?
Homework: 7 Regents questions- attached below.
New Vocab:
Gene- A segment of DNA that codes for a protein
Expression– When a segment of DNA is actively coding for a protein, and the protein trait is being produced, a gene is being expressed.
Trait- A characteristic displayed by a protein
Key Regents Concepts:
1. Genes are segments of DNA that code for proteins
2. A trait is controlled by many genes, and most genes control more than one trait
3. Genes, or protein production, may be turned “on” or “off” throughout an organisms life time. When a gene is turned “off,” the protein is no longer made and the trait is no longer seen. For example- hair that turns gray.
4. Gene expression may be altered by the environment- weather, temperature, soil conditions, light, etc.
