Aim: How can annotating help us figure out the mood of a text?
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to (SWBAT):
- Annotate students story to figure out their mood
- List claims on what mood the student was in during each event
DIRECT INSTRUCTION
- What is meant by the term annotation?
An annotation is metadata (e.g. a comment, explanation, presentational markup) attached to text, image, or other data. Often annotations refer to a specific part of the original data.
- How can annotating be used to help us figure out the mood an Author is trying to portray in their story / novel/ poem.
GUIDED PRACTICE
- Students will read an event that took place in another’s student’s life.
- Students will read and annotate the student’s story/ event to figure out the mood they were trying to portray in their writing assignment.
- Students are to select certain words that represent the mood/s the author was trying to portray.
- If the mood is different from what the author was trying to portray or there was no mood, students should show evidence of why they thought it was a different mood.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
- Reading and annotating text
- Working with the one another to talk about what was done well or not done well and improve on their writing.
