Classroom visit
Today we had a guest speaker in our class. Shoun Kennedy started his career as a paramedic professional. He worked at a hospital in Manahattan. One day when he arrived at work there were pad locks on the door. The hospital closed without any notice. Shoun explained how frightened he was with nowhere to go. He went on to explain how scary it was to have to start all over again. He decided to become a home repair expert. The students asked many questions about the fear he had in changing careers. He went on to tell them how dark the days were when folowing the closure of the hospital and how happy he is today in his current field. On Friday, May 3, 2013 Olympia will return to do interviews with the student. We have done … [Read more...]
How do you know if your clay’s too dry?
When you're using the coil method to make a clay slab, dry clay is a bummer. Dry clay is hard to shape, working with it wears your fingers out! And it's always cracking and breaking apart. MOIST clay, on the other hand is a buttery pleasure to work with and will oblige you by forming into almost any shape you desire, within reason. So, how do you know if it's too dry? If you push into or bend clay and lots of tiny cracks appear, you need to hydrate your clay with a little sprinkle of water and some kneading. (Sophomores know what I mean) On the other hand if you press your finger into the clay and it gives easily without sticking to your skin, moist it is. Use it or lose it. … [Read more...]

Nets Game Incentive Trip for Honor Roll Students
On Monday, April 15th, 75 students who were in the first marking period honor roll were invited to see the Nets play the Washington Wizards at the Barclay's Center for free. As additional reward for their hard work, the top 15 students in the honor roll were able to sit court-side, where they were provided Nets thunder sticks by the Nets' mascot, the Brooklyn Knight. It was truly a magnificent experience for many of the students, some of which, like junior Luis Mercado, had never attended a live professional basketball game before. The Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design takes pride in rewarding students who achieve academically, which result in incentive field trips for all honor roll students at the end of … [Read more...]
