WHSAD's Makerspace students have the opportunity to engage in projects that are real-world oriented, learning and developing key skills that provide them with a head-start in their work after high school. One of the key components of our after school program is the guest speakers who share their insights regarding their place in the field, what their careers have been like, and how students should proceed in their work. This Wednesday, Mr. Richard Bearak, who currently works for Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams, thoroughly answered questions from WHSAD students. Below is Richard's presentation as well as some takeaways from our students. In the presentation of Richard Bearak he was answering lots of questions and one of … [Read more...]

Gensler’s Inaugural Design Discovery Session
WHSAD’s goal as a high school is to look beyond high school. Our students engage in activities that have them continuously considering the future and exploring possibilities. For much of WHSAD’s existence, we have had the opportunity to partner with renowned architecture firm, Genlser. Through design projects such as 25 Kent and after school programs such as ACE, WHSAD has always enjoyed the Gensler team as a source of insight and inspiration. This year, we are excited to add another dimension to this partnership, as Gensler launches its Discovery Design Program, and WHSAD’s students are fortunate enough to receive instruction regarding the architecture and design fields. Today, December 8th, the program kicked off as students heard … [Read more...]
Matthew Zaczeniuk and Brianny Estevez’s Minecraft Build Presentation
In this video, Matthew Zaczeniuk walks us through the build on which he and Brianny Estevez collaborated during their remote experience in their freshmen architecture class. Thanks to the flexibility and creativity of their teachers, Mr. Ira Geringer and Mr. Abraham Rodriguez, students stayed engaged and learning during the tumultuous spring months of the pandemic. The project illustrates the potential for platforms, such as Minecraft, to heighten the design and creation process, develop partnerships in order to achieve exemplary results, and display final products through deliberate planning of presentations. Below is both their artist statement, written by Brianny, and the video. Our entire thought process surrounded current … [Read more...]
Mayerli Barzola Presents Her Vision for Her Break Room Design
This year has certainly presented its challenges, to some more than others. Our WHSAD Seniors are like so many other students who were looking to the spring months as moments of the surreal bliss that is momentarily afforded us. And while there is a great deal one could lament and pine for, these students continue to demonstrate resolve. Mr. Codio, Senior Business of Architecture teacher, and his students exemplify such determination. In the process of developing their firms, students have gained tremendous experience due to the insights of Mr. Codio and various staff members, but maybe the best insights have come from peers. In the following clips, Mayerli Barzola remotely presented her vision for Euphoria's (her firm) break room … [Read more...]

WHSAD Students’ Black History Month Speeches at New York City Department of Buildings
On Thursday, February 27th, a group of WHSAD students attended a Black History Month function at the New York City Department of Buildings. Mr. Victor Body-Lawson, of Body Lawson Associates, provided insights regarding what it took for him to found a firm and the challenges related to succeeding in the architectural field. Thank you to Ms. Lisa Lewis from the Department of Buildings for arranging the event and making the students feel so welcome. The students' speeches are posted below. Their work in writing and then preparing to present required commitment during after-school, weekend, and holiday hours. These students demonstrate how so many of WHSAD's students are willing to go beyond regular school time in order to realize … [Read more...]
Students Explore Electrical Reactions in Ms. Ostashevsky’s Chemistry Class
What is electricity? WHSAD students got their curiosity sparked in today's lab. By adding an electrochemical battery to a sugar and then a salt solution, they were able to tell which of the two compounds conducts electricity. Then they had to explain what about the atomic structure of ionic and covalent compounds allowed the conduction of electrons through solution. This Chemistry lesson dovetails with what the students are doing in Mr. O'Brien & Ms Moos's Building and Design class. In those classes, they build electrical circuits; in Chemistry they learn how electricity flows on the submicroscopic level. Watch the attached videos for their explanations. … [Read more...]
WHSAD Students in Pratt Young Scholars Program
WHSAD is proud of our students and how many of them take initiative in pursuing their passions in programs outside of school hours. However, such programs would often remain unknown without the insights and assistance of dedicated staff members. In this particular case, freshman architecture teacher, Mr. Ira Geringer, assisted his freshmen, who are now sophomores, to apply to the Pratt Young Scholars Program. After going through the application process, four WHSAD students were granted scholarships valued at $7,000. These scholarships provide “three years of studio instruction, all art materials for courses taken, [a] year-round college access program, Summer Scholars courses in July, and guidance through the college application process.” … [Read more...]
WHSAD at Co-op Tech
In the following narrative, WHSAD Senior, Jessica Juarez, shares her experience in the Natural Hair Styling program at Co-op Tech. For years, the partnership between WHSAD and Co-op Tech has provided our seniors with hands-on training in career paths and, thus, opportunities to make the most of their days immediately after graduation. Look for more stories from Jessica as she highlights what other seniors are taking on in their Co-op Tech learning. The School of Cooperative Technical Education is a program that offers students the opportunity to learn skills for a specific occupation. Co-op Tech offers classes to high school students and graduates who are 17 to 21 years old. Students are given the opportunity to take part in the … [Read more...]
