In the second installment of their 2020-2021 educational program, architecture firm and WHSAD partner, GENSLER, held a workshop entitled “A day in the Life of A Designer”. Students were introduced to team roles in interior design, architecture, and design strategy. Many thanks to our guest speakers, Arielle Levy, Chasen VanLang and Lis Russo. Below is the full presentation along with some student takeaways from the program. Every time I see the bright red logo or just hear the name GENSLER, I think of opportunities, offers, a future, and a great work environment in which someone like me, a young future architect, would love to work. I am inspired by each one of their works. Taking inspiration from one of my favorite Gensler … [Read more...]
Stefanie Marazzi of Hirschen Singer & Epstein LLP Speaks NYC Zoning Particulars with WHSAD Makerspace
Building is complicated, but building in New York City can be a herculean task. Navigating the process of designing, implementing, and getting approval from the powers that be requires energy, patience, and intelligence. Numerous individuals in various roles take part in said process, one role that is crucial for ensuring that architects, engineers, and contractors follow legal precedents is that of the lawyer. On Wednesday, January 27th, Stefanie Marazzi, partner at Hirschen Singer & Epstein LLP, shared her extensive knowledge of New York City zoning laws. Students learned about topics such as building envelopes, zoning codes, the process of rezoning and acquiring permits, and historical zoning cases. These presentations give WHSAD … [Read more...]
WHSAD Class of 2019 Alum, Justin Mora, Speaks in the Makerspace
This Friday, WHSAD Makerspace students heard from Justin Mora about his studies at City Tech, his work at A-1 Iron Works, and how a WHSAD education helped him transition to college more easily. Each Friday, we welcome our alumni to speak to our students about college and career experiences, opportunities, and objectives, and the value of these presentations cannot be overstated. Below is Justin's presentation as well as takeaways from some current WHSAD students. Justin's presentation was very eye opening. He was very helpful and really taught me that I should really take advantage of the things WHSAD offers. Also, he gave tips on how to balance school work and actual work, which can personally help me because that's something that … [Read more...]
Bushwick Generator Community Partners Present to the Makerspace
Places for collaboration, community outreach and development, and inspiration are more important than ever. For what will be a year this coming March, the world has been wracked by the effects of a pandemic no one saw coming, and thus, one for which none of us were prepared. However, one could say the pandemic showed us quite a bit about what humans are capable of when it comes to supporting one another, and the work done at the Bushwick Generator is a perfect example of humans helping one another through trying times. In this Wednesday’s WHSAD Makerspace session, students heard inspirational narratives from community leaders as to the work done before, during, and will continue after Covid-19. Jay Solly, Cofounder of Sustainable … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? One major thing/lesson I have learned from Makerspace is to take advantage of the different opportunities that are available. Each opportunity can lead you down a different path and can help you explore the field of architecture instead of being stuck doing the same thing. Each opportunity can also help you build up a network for yourself and increase the amount of people you know. The opportunities also help you build up your portfolio and look more professional to other people and businesses. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? I feel like my greatest strength is creating organization and coming up with ideas … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? I have learned how to be a better student and have learned how to function in a work based environment. I have learned how to present my work in a professional manner and how to receive and understand the feedback I receive from showing my work to my mentors. One memorable moment I have experienced was presenting my progress on the WSP project. My presentations have allowed me to understand how to receive feedback in a professional manner. Presenting in front of a class is very different from presenting in this work environment, and I know that what I learn from this will definitely help me in the future. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? I’ve learned a lot about the environment and the importance of architecture and design. Before I joined Makerspace I always knew that architecture and design was like peanut butter and jelly. But after Makerspace,I knew that architecture and design was something I wanted to do. The mentors pushed me to be confident in myself, dreams, and ideas. Half the things in makerspace I would not have learned in my 9th, 10th and 11th architecture classes . 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? I think my greatest strength would be being vocal and designing. To be realistic I’m a really talkative person. It helps to know that … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? I learned both personal and professional skills through my work in the Makerspace. For example, I learned different programs in which I can interact with my peers easier. I also learned important components needed to be controlled or taken into account for constructing a design. Some components may be the local laws, law codes, community laws, community input, etc. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? I believe that my greatest strength is leadership and managing. Although I am not the project manager, I have played the project manager role in many other projects. With this being said, I have the experience to … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? Makerspace has taught me a lot, especially about how to be effective with my time. Throughout the duration of Makerspace, the facilitators have helped my team and I use our time to actually end up with a beneficial result, rather than having nothing. One of the facilitators uses miro.com, which I find is very useful for creating tasks and making sure they are completed. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? Based on my work so far, I think my greatest strength is organizing information, especially when creating a presentation with Google Slides. I believe this is my greatest strength because when presenting to a … [Read more...]

1. What have you learned so far in your work in the Makerspace? Makerspace has provided me a very interesting experience and my first ever official project. It also helped me get out of my comfort zone since I don’t really talk to people who are not my age beside my teachers. Now, I am able to talk to two members who are younger than me without a problem. One challenge I faced is knowing more about the laws and regulations at Snug Harbor. I was able to find out some info with a website provided to me by my mentor. 2. Based on what you have done so far, what do you think is your greatest strength and why? My greatest strength is being very flexible since I was unable to be part of my project instantly. But once I was able to take … [Read more...]
