Summer Internship Applications Available!
Applications are now available for the 2017 WHSAD Summer Internship Program! There are approximately 30 positions available at various sites across New York City with companies and organizations related to architecture, engineering, design, construction, preservation, etc. Sophomores and Juniors, who are 16 by May 15th, are eligible to apply this year. You will need a current resume, and a short writing sample. Application packets are available from your CTE teacher, guidance counselor, AP, or Ms. Wilson in Room 139. Don't miss out! WHSAD Students Begin Design Competition
As part of WHSAD's ongoing partnership with Heritage Equity Partners, six pairs of students will spend the next two months designing the 25 Kent sales office that will be built out this summer in the building currently rising at 55 North 10th Street, here in Williamsburg. Students will be mentored by architects from Gensler, who will provide regular feedback on the students' plans as they develop their designs for the interior space, including the layout, finishes, and renderings. As the initial meeting for this project, the students took a tour of 55 North 10th Street on Wednesday, March 16th where they were able to see the different stages of construction the hotel is in, and spent time taking measurements in the sales office space. … [Read more...]

WHSAD Seniors Accepted to DSF Internship Program
Five students in the Class of 2016 have been accepted into the NYCDOE's Division of School Facilities Internship Program for the Spring 2016 term. Following a week of job readiness training, three interns, Nathifa Debellotte, Samara Hernandez, and Terrelle Jones, will be paired with DSF carpenters to work on maintenance and repairs at various NYCDOE schools. Two interns, Ayana McKoy and Cassharese Smith, will work at DSF headquarters with the Energy Management team. … [Read more...]
Ramon Williams – Class of 2014
Ramon Williams is currently in his sophomore year at Franklin & Marshall studying Astrophysics. “ WHSAD was definitely without a doubt an amazing experience for me. Outside of the academic aspects of WHSAD, we have a multitude of clubs that helped us as students express our interests and try out different activities outside of just Architecture. The school assists many students in entering the work force by offering many extra-curricular activities to the under classmen as well as internships and job opportunities to any student above the age of 16. Mark Alston and Corbin Everett – Class of 2015
Class of 2015 graduates Mark Alston and Corbin Everett are both first-year apprentices with Local 580 Ornamental Ironworkers. Since starting their apprenticeships in September 2015, they have been working on the construction of the Hudson Yards development on the west side of Manhattan. As Ornamental Ironworkers, they are responsible for all non-structural ironwork in the buildings, including window frames, railings, staircases, etc. Mark: "I have to get up at 4:30 every morning to be on the job site by 6am. Being late is not an option. Blueprint reading is not taught until the 3rd year of the apprenticeship, but I already know how to do that because I learned it at WHSAD." WHSAD Students visit NYC Department of Buildings
On Thursday, October 8th, 2015, twenty-five WHSAD students, 11th and 12th graders, were invited to visit the NYC Department of Buildings’ facilities in Manhattan. During a tour of the DOB’s Development Hub, and in a presentation by the Deputy Commissioner, Scott Pavan, students learned about the various roles the DOB plays in the ongoing development of New York City. Conversations with DOB architects and engineers informed students about the different career options available, and how they might begin pursuing those opportunities while still in college. WHSAD Students Help to Restore Historic Oil Tanker
During the summer of 2015, three WHSAD students, Carlos Cuadrado '16, Alyson Montesdeoca '17, and Ashby Rivera '16, spent six weeks interning with PortSideNY, a not-for-profit organization restoring the Mary A. Whalen oil tanker. The students worked along side professionals to restore features of the historic ship, while also learning about the maritime history of the ship and of Brooklyn. WHSAD students first volunteered on the Mary A. Whalen in April 2015 for a tw0-day Field School; following that experience, PortSideNY interviewed a dozen students, from whom they selected their three interns.
