Topic 9 (Trapezoid Medians)
Today we worked with medians in trapezoids. A median in a trapezoid is a line that connects the midpoints of the legs. The median is always parallel to the bases and its length is equal to the average of the lengths of two bases. Follow this link and use the interactive animation to see that this is always true. http://www.mathopenref.com/trapezoidmedian.html To see how we applied this fact to some algebraic problems check the classwork and the homework below: [gview file="https://www.whsad.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Lesson-8-Homework.docx"] [gview file="https://www.whsad.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Lesson-8-Activity-Sheet.docx"] … [Read more...]

Topic 8 (Diagonals)
Today we explored the properties of the diagonals in multiple types of quadrilaterals. There is an online app. that can help you explore diagonal properties. App. 1: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=3578 App. 2: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activity.aspx?id=4099 We can use the accompanying sheet to help structure our use of these apps. Below this is a summary sheet with all of the properties. Topic 7 (Rhombuses)
The rhombus is the final type of quadrilateral that we are going to work with. A rhombus is the same thing as a parallelogram except we have to add one extra piece of information, all sides are equal. So... rhombus - a four sided figure with two sets of parallel sides and four equal sides We found that rhombuses have a slightly more strict definition than parallelograms since they ask us to have two pairs of parallel lines in both definitions, BUT the rhombus requires that all four sides are equal also.
