The College Focus Summer Program is designed primarily to help high school students avoid remedial coursework at the City University of New York and qualify for admission to a four-year CUNY college. College Focus classes prepare students to pass the CUNY Assessment Tests, in order to meet standards for placement into credit-bearing courses upon entrance to a CUNY college. Eligible students participate in pre- and post-assessment, and complete a 60-hour course over five weeks.
The program will run during Summer 2013 with approximately 350 rising high school senior participants and will take place at four CUNY campuses: LaGuardia CC, Hostos CC, Kingsborough CC, and Queensborough CC. Participating students will complete a 60-hour course over five weeks (July 8 – August 8) in reading & writing OR math. In addition, they will receive supplemental tutoring, attend college access and success workshops, and be provided with student Metrocards, daily lunch and CUNY application fee waivers. At the conclusion of the program, students will take the CUNY Assessment Test; those who meet the CUNY entrance standards will have the opportunity to enroll in College Now courses from CUNY’s many transferable general education offerings. Successful completion of these credit-bearing courses help students accumulate college credit towards a degree.
Eligibility for participation:
CUNY Collaborative Programs will work with school liaisons to identify students who would benefit from College Focus. Each college campus site will offer one to two College Focus sections of a Reading/Writing course and/or one to two sections of a Math course (25 students per section). Students may not participate in both the Math and Reading/Writing courses simultaneously. Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for participation:
