Ms. Wilson (The Internship Coordinator at WHSAD): Construction skills is a pre-apprenticeship program that students apply to in the spring semester of their senior year. They participate to prepare them to enter the unionized building trades in the trade union of their choice.
Joshua Cruz: This acceptance impacts me by giving me new skills to learn and an opportunity in the construction field for my future. I feel pretty excited to experience this program and see what type of skills they are going to teach me. I’m expecting to learn construction skills and have a good time and do a lot of hands on activities. This contributes to my goal because if I do well in this program I could get a good paying job which can help get me financially. Another way it can help me is receiving skills not that many people are able to get a chance to learn. I could probably also improve and learn new things for my welding skills. Since I found out I got accepted, I’ve been ready to start this new experience.
Hector Ramos: I am really looking forward to Construction Skills and what it will teach me for my future. I know Construction Skills will not be easy but this is a program to better my professional and technical skills so it will not be like a walk in the park. I like this opportunity because it will challenge me and make me better at what I want to do in the future. This contributes to my goals greatly. My goal is to become a master electrician with my own company. This program will get my foot in the door at one of the best electrical unions, the IBEW Local 3. This program will prepare me to make my goals a reality.
Andy Miranda: Getting accepted to construction skills is the willingness to learn a whole new set of skills and adapt in a new environment. I feel good about this because this is a way to start my career on the right path. I’m expecting to be challenged because doing this shows it is a physically and mentally challenging career. There are plenty of skills and traits construction workers need to possess in order to be successful in their work. Some of the skills that are required Strength and Stamina, Math and Language Literacy, and to be able to work well with others. Construction is a team effort.Team players help build up the team and foster good communication and better construction. That’s why it’s an essential construction skill. This contributes to my goals because my goals would be directly related to my construction work and abilities in the field.
Joel A. Espinal: This acceptance to the spring Pre-apprenticeship class with the Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills has opened more opportunities for my career. This program will allow me to gain experience and strengthen my skills. It also gives me an opportunity to receive a union job at the end of the program. The job will allow me to gain experience while I expand my skills. I am thrilled to see the professional growth that awaits me and all the new possibilities. I expect to sharpen my skills and grow personally and professionally. I’m also planning on networking within the program. This will allow me to find mentors and supporters that will assist me in reaching my full potential. Networking is also important when trying to gain as much experience as possible. This contributes to my goal because I’m getting experience while also getting a job that will be permanent. It helps me reach my career goal of having a home and a car in the next 3 to 5 years. Having financial security will allow me to begin a new business that will allow others to see my skills and potential.
